Fire Red Shrimp
Shrimp & Invertebrates
Fire Red Shrimp are a premium red Neocaridina variety loved for their rich, solid coloration and active behaviour in planted freshwater aquariums. They are excellent for nano tanks…
Fire Red Shrimp are a high-grade color form of Neocaridina davidi, selected for their deep, bright red body coverage and attractive presence in planted aquariums. These shrimp are popular with both beginners and experienced shrimp keepers because they are active, eye-catching, and generally easier to maintain than many delicate shrimp species when kept in stable freshwater conditions. In a well-set aquarium with moss, biofilm, and gentle filtration, Fire Red Shrimp spend the day grazing on surfaces and adding constant movement to the tank.
This variety works especially well in nano aquariums, shrimp-only tanks, and peaceful planted community setups. Their best colour usually develops under good diet, clean water, dark substrate, and low-stress surroundings. Because they are small in size, they do best with tiny, non-aggressive tank mates or in dedicated shrimp colonies where they can feed, moult, and breed comfortably.
Key Features
- Appearance: Bright to deep fiery red coloration across the body, with higher grade specimens showing stronger and more even coverage.
- Size: Usually supplied as small juvenile to young adult shrimp, with adults commonly reaching around 2 to 3 cm.
- Colors: Intense red body tone that stands out beautifully against green plants, moss, and darker aquascape layouts.
- Lifespan: With proper care and stable water, they may live around 1 to 2 years.
- Temperament: Peaceful, non-aggressive, and ideal for calm aquariums without predators.
- Water Type: Freshwater shrimp suitable for established tanks with stable parameters.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A 10 to 20 litre nano tank can work for a small group, but larger aquariums offer better stability and colony growth.
- Water Parameters: Best kept around 20 to 26°C with pH roughly 6.8 to 7.8. Sudden swings in temperature, pH, TDS, or hardness should be avoided.
- Diet: They feed on biofilm, algae, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods in small amounts.
- Tank Mates: Best with other peaceful nano species. Avoid large fish, finicky predators, and anything likely to hunt baby shrimp.
- Care Tips: Use shrimp-safe filtration such as sponge filters or guarded intakes, provide moss and hiding places, and keep ammonia and nitrite at zero.
- Moulting Support: Stable minerals and clean water are important because shrimp moult regularly as they grow. Avoid sudden major water changes.
- Planted Tank Suitability: Excellent for planted aquariums where they can graze on natural surfaces and feel secure among fine-leaved plants.
- Breeding Potential: In the right setup, Neocaridina shrimp often breed readily, making them a popular colony shrimp for hobbyists.
For best results, add Fire Red Shrimp only to mature, cycled aquariums. Slow acclimation is strongly recommended, especially when moving shrimp into a new tank, because shrimp are far more sensitive to sudden water changes than many common aquarium fish.
