Thailand Glass Catfish, also known as Kryptopterus vitreolus, is a fascinating freshwater aquarium fish admired for its almost fully transparent body and graceful schooling behaviour. Its glass-like appearance makes it a standout choice for hobbyists who enjoy unusual yet peaceful community fish. This species does best in well-maintained aquariums with gentle flow, stable water quality, and the security of a group.
Unlike solitary catfish species, Glass Catfish are social and feel far more confident when kept in a school. When settled, they often hover together in midwater, creating a beautiful shimmering effect that looks especially impressive in planted tanks or aquariums with dark backgrounds. Their peaceful temperament makes them suitable for calm community setups with similarly gentle tank mates.
Key Features
- Appearance: Slender, transparent body with visible internal structure, giving this fish its famous glass-like look.
- Size: Usually grows to around 8 to 10 cm in home aquariums when provided with proper care and stable conditions.
- Colors: Mostly clear and silvery with delicate fins; its beauty comes from transparency rather than bright pigmentation.
- Lifespan: Can live around 5 to 8 years with good water quality, suitable diet, and low-stress conditions.
- Temperament: Peaceful, shy, and schooling; best kept in groups to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
- Water Type: Freshwater species suited to mature aquariums with clean, well-oxygenated water.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 75 to 90 litres is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks offer better stability and swimming space.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 23 to 27°C with pH around 6.5 to 7.5. Soft to moderately hard water is generally preferred.
- Diet: Accepts quality micro pellets, fine granules, frozen foods, and live foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.
- Tank Mates: Best with peaceful fish like small tetras, rasboras, peaceful gouramis, and other non-aggressive community species.
- Care Tips: Keep them in a school of at least 5 to 6 fish, avoid sudden water changes, and provide plants or driftwood for security.
- Behaviour: They usually occupy the middle level of the tank and may become nervous in bright, exposed setups without cover.
- Filtration: Gentle but efficient filtration is ideal, as they appreciate clean water without excessively strong current.
Thailand Glass Catfish is a rewarding choice for aquarists who can provide a peaceful, stable environment. It is not a rough-and-tough beginner fish, but in a calm community aquarium with proper group size, this transparent catfish becomes one of the most elegant and eye-catching fish in the tank.
