Red Lava Chips are a natural volcanic gravel option for aquariums, terrariums, planters, and decorative hardscape layouts. Their porous structure and earthy red tone make them especially useful in planted tanks, shrimp setups, drainage layers, and aquascapes where you want a rugged natural look without using heavy stone throughout the layout.
Because lava chips are lightweight and full of micro-pores, they are often used below decorative top layers, mixed with other gravels, or placed around roots and hardscape to create texture. In aquarium use, many hobbyists prefer them for planted layouts, biological surface support, and as a base material in areas where water circulation through the substrate is helpful.
Key Features
- Grain Size: Irregular chip-style pieces with a rough natural texture; exact size may vary from batch to batch because this is a natural stone product.
- Colour: Deep red to reddish-brown volcanic tone that adds a bold, earthy contrast in planted aquariums and natural hardscape layouts.
- pH Effect: Generally considered relatively inert to mildly influential depending on source and water chemistry; rinsing and testing in sensitive setups is recommended.
- Suitable For: Freshwater planted aquariums, drainage layers, substrate mixing, shrimp tanks, terrariums, paludariums, and decorative landscaping use.
- Porous Structure: The naturally pitted surface offers excellent area for beneficial bacteria to colonise compared with very smooth decorative gravel.
- Lightweight Build: Easier to stack, layer, or mix into aquascapes than many dense stones, while still giving a rugged volcanic appearance.
- Depth Recommendation: Use as a thin decorative layer, mixed substrate component, or lower drainage layer depending on your tank design and planting method.
How To Use
- Preparation: Rinse thoroughly before use to remove dust and loose particles. Initial rinse water may appear cloudy or tinted from fine volcanic dust.
- Layering: Can be used alone in selected zones, mixed with gravel, or placed beneath aquasoil and decorative substrate to improve structure and drainage.
- Planting Tips: Best suited for tanks where rooted plants are supported with nutrient-rich layers, root tabs, or mixed planted substrate rather than relying on inert chips alone.
- Aquascaping Use: Works well around driftwood, rock bases, and slope transitions to create a natural lava-field look and stronger visual depth.
- Maintenance: During deep cleaning, avoid aggressive stirring if used as a lower layer. Light siphoning of surface debris is usually enough in established tanks.
- Compatibility: Suitable for most freshwater setups, but sharp-edged pieces should be checked before use with delicate bottom dwellers that prefer very smooth substrate.
As this is a natural product, shape, shade, and chip size can vary slightly from one pack to another. For display aquascapes, many hobbyists combine red lava chips with wood, moss, epiphyte plants, or darker top gravel to create a balanced and natural-looking layout.
