Golden Balloon Ram is a selectively bred form of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi known for its compact balloon body, rich golden-yellow colour and lively personality. This dwarf cichlid is especially popular in planted freshwater aquariums where its colour stands out beautifully against green plants, dark substrate and natural hardscape. It suits hobbyists who can provide stable warm water, gentle tank mates and regular maintenance.
Although small in size, Golden Balloon Ram has the typical charm of ram cichlids: alert behaviour, interesting social interaction and a strong presence in nano to medium community tanks. Because it is a line-bred ornamental fish, it does best in clean, mature aquariums with low stress and consistent water conditions rather than newly set up tanks.
Key Features
- Appearance: Rounded balloon body with a compact dwarf cichlid profile, bright metallic golden tones and elegant finnage.
- Size: Usually sold as a small ornamental specimen and generally grows to around 5 to 7 cm in aquarium conditions.
- Colors: Predominantly golden yellow with subtle iridescence; intensity can improve under good diet, warm water and low-stress care.
- Lifespan: With proper feeding and stable water quality, this fish may live around 2 to 4 years.
- Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive; generally calm in community setups but can become territorial during feeding or breeding.
- Water Type: Freshwater tropical fish best kept in stable, clean and well-filtered aquariums.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of about 60 litres or more is recommended for a pair or small group, with plants, hiding spots and open swimming space.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 26 to 30°C with pH around 5.5 to 7.2. Soft to moderately hard water and strong stability are more important than chasing exact numbers.
- Diet: Feed a varied diet of quality micro pellets, fine granules, frozen foods and occasional live foods suitable for dwarf cichlids.
- Tank Mates: Best with peaceful tetras, rasboras, small catfish and other calm warm-water fish. Avoid fin nippers and overly aggressive cichlids.
- Care Level: Better suited to intermediate hobbyists because rams can be sensitive to ammonia, sudden temperature swings and poor acclimation.
- Aquascape Tips: Use driftwood, rocks, leaf litter or planted zones to break line of sight and reduce stress, especially in mixed community tanks.
- Maintenance: Weekly water changes, mature filtration and careful feeding help keep this fish active, colourful and settled.
Golden Balloon Ram is a great choice for aquarists who want a colourful centerpiece fish for a planted tropical setup without moving into large aggressive cichlids. For best results, add it only to a cycled aquarium and acclimate slowly to reduce stress after transport.
