The Congo Tetra is one of the most eye-catching schooling fish available for freshwater aquariums, prized for its iridescent body sheen, soft blue-orange highlights, and graceful finnage. Native to the Congo River Basin, this species adds movement, colour, and a refined display effect to well-planted community tanks. Males usually show longer fins and stronger shimmer, while females are slightly more compact and subtle in colour.
This fish is best kept in groups, where its natural confidence and schooling behaviour can be seen properly. Congo Tetras are peaceful by nature and suit aquarists who want an active yet non-aggressive fish for a medium to large aquarium. In the right setup with dark substrate, open swimming space, and gentle lighting, their metallic glow becomes especially striking.

- Size: Usually sold as juvenile to sub-adult specimens and can grow to around 8 cm to 10 cm in home aquariums.
- Colors: Displays a beautiful mix of blue, violet, gold, and orange tones that shift under aquarium lighting.
- Lifespan: With stable water quality and proper feeding, Congo Tetras can live around 3 to 5 years or more.
- Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social; they do best in a proper school rather than singly or in pairs.

Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 90 litres is recommended for a small group, though larger aquariums are much better for schooling behaviour and fin development.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 23°C to 27°C with a pH of about 6.0 to 7.5. Soft to moderately hard water is generally preferred.
- Diet: Omnivorous and easy to feed on quality flakes, micro pellets, small granules, and occasional frozen or live foods like bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp.
- Tank Mates: Suitable with other peaceful community fish such as rasboras, peaceful barbs, Corydoras, gouramis, and other non-fin-nipping tetras.
- Schooling Need: Best kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger groups usually show better colour, less stress, and more natural movement.
- Care Tips: Use plants around the sides and back with open swimming space in the centre. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping tank mates, and maintain regular water changes for best colour and health.
Congo Tetras are a strong display choice for aquarists building an elegant community aquarium. Their peaceful nature, shimmering colour play, and active schooling behaviour make them especially rewarding in mature, stable tanks.
