Cherry Barb
Aquarium Fish
Cherry Barb is a peaceful, brightly coloured freshwater community fish loved for its rich red tones and active schooling behaviour. It is a beginner-friendly species that does well…
Cherry Barb is a small and attractive freshwater aquarium fish prized for its warm red coloration, peaceful nature, and easy care. Native to shaded forest streams of Sri Lanka, this species is a great choice for community tanks, planted setups, and aquarists who want active fish without aggression. Males usually show deeper cherry-red colour, especially when settled well and kept in a stress-free group, while females are slightly fuller and more subtle in tone.
This fish is best kept in a small school, where it feels secure and displays more natural behaviour. Cherry Barbs spend much of their time swimming in the middle and lower areas of the aquarium, adding constant movement and colour. Their gentle temperament makes them suitable for mixed freshwater tanks with other peaceful fish of similar size.
Key Features
- Appearance: Slim-bodied barb with a soft, elegant shape and a bright reddish body that becomes more intense in healthy, mature males.
- Size: Usually grows to around 4 to 5 cm, making it suitable for nano to medium community aquariums.
- Colors: Males often develop rich cherry-red tones, while females may appear lighter with a more natural bronze-red body.
- Lifespan: With stable water quality and proper feeding, Cherry Barbs can live around 4 to 6 years in home aquariums.
- Temperament: Peaceful, shy at first, and best kept in groups to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behaviour.
- Water Type: Freshwater species that prefers clean, well-maintained water with gentle flow.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 45 litres is recommended for a small group, though larger planted aquariums bring out better colour and activity.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 22 to 28°C with a pH of about 6.0 to 7.5. Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers.
- Diet: Omnivorous and easy to feed on quality micro pellets, flakes, crushed granules, and occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia or bloodworms.
- Tank Mates: Suitable with rasboras, tetras, peaceful barbs, corydoras, small gouramis, and other non-aggressive community fish.
- Care Tips: Keep them in a group of at least 6 for confidence and better colour. Dense plants, darker substrate, and shaded areas help them settle faster.
- Aquascape Preference: They appreciate planted tanks with open swimming space, driftwood, and gentle filtration rather than strong current.
Cherry Barb is an excellent option for aquarists looking for a hardy, colourful, and community-safe fish. For best display, keep a healthy group in a calm planted aquarium and maintain regular water changes to support strong colour and active behaviour.
