The BSP Angel, also known as Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish, is a rare selectively bred variety of Pterophyllum scalare admired for its soft silvery to greenish pearlescent body and striking dark seal-point style pigmentation on the outer fins and face. Its tall body shape, flowing finnage and calm, watchful swimming pattern make it a standout display fish for freshwater aquariums. This variety suits hobbyists who want an angelfish with an uncommon pattern and a refined, premium appearance.
Like other angelfish, BSP Angel grows into a laterally compressed but tall cichlid, so vertical swimming space is important. It can be kept in a peaceful to semi-aggressive community when tank mates are chosen carefully, and it does especially well in well-filtered aquariums with stable water conditions, moderate planting and open swimming areas.
Key Features
- Appearance: Pale or silvery-green pearlescent body with dramatic dark pigmentation concentrated around the face and outer fins, creating the classic seal-point look.
- Size: Juveniles are compact, but adults can reach around 15 cm body length with noticeably greater overall height including fins.
- Colors: Soft metallic silver, light greenish sheen and contrasting black to charcoal fin edging and facial markings.
- Lifespan: With good care, angelfish commonly live around 8 to 10 years in home aquariums.
- Temperament: Generally calm but territorial at times, especially during pairing or breeding; best described as peaceful to semi-aggressive.
- Water Type: Freshwater species suitable for tropical aquariums with stable parameters.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or small setup, with taller tanks preferred because angelfish need vertical space for proper fin development.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 24 to 28°C with pH around 6.5 to 7.5. Clean, low-stress water conditions help maintain finnage and colour quality.
- Diet: Feed a varied omnivorous diet including quality flakes, pellets, frozen foods and occasional protein-rich treats such as bloodworms or brine shrimp.
- Tank Mates: Best with similarly sized peaceful fish such as larger tetras, rainbowfish, peaceful gouramis and bottom dwellers that do not nip fins. Avoid very small fish that may be seen as food and known fin nippers.
- Care Tips: Provide gentle flow, regular water changes and a layout with plants or driftwood for security while still leaving open swimming space. Watch for aggression if keeping multiple angels in limited space.
BSP Angel is an excellent choice for aquarists building a premium freshwater display tank. Its unusual pattern, graceful movement and classic angelfish form make it especially attractive as a centerpiece fish when maintained in stable, spacious conditions.
