Boesemani Rainbowfish is one of the most eye-catching freshwater community fish available for home aquariums. Native to the Ayamaru Lakes region of West Papua, this species is admired for its beautiful half-blue, half-orange body pattern, active swimming style, and peaceful nature when kept in the right group size. It is a great choice for hobbyists who want a lively display fish for a spacious planted or community setup.
This species shows its best colours in clean, well-oxygenated water and in tanks with open swimming space. Males usually develop stronger contrast and deeper body shape as they mature, while females are slightly slimmer and softer in colour. Because they are schooling fish, they feel more secure and behave more naturally when kept in a group rather than alone.
Key Features
- Appearance: Distinctive two-tone body with shimmering blue on the front half and golden orange to yellow on the rear half.
- Size: Adults can reach around 10 to 12 cm, making them suitable for medium to large freshwater aquariums.
- Colors: Best colour development is seen under good lighting, quality diet, and low-stress tank conditions.
- Lifespan: With stable water quality and proper feeding, they can live for around 5 to 8 years.
- Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social; ideal for community tanks with similarly calm tank mates.
- Water Type: Freshwater species that prefers clean, mature aquariums with good filtration and regular maintenance.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 90 to 120 litres is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks preferred for better schooling behaviour.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 24 to 28°C with a pH range of about 7.0 to 8.0. Stable conditions are more important than frequent fluctuations.
- Diet: Omnivorous and easy to feed; accepts quality flakes, micro pellets, and occasional frozen or live foods to improve colour and activity.
- Tank Mates: Suitable with tetras, larger rasboras, peaceful barbs, gouramis, corydoras, and other non-aggressive community fish.
- Group Keeping: Best kept in schools of 6 or more, as group living reduces stress and encourages natural movement and display behaviour.
- Care Tips: Provide open swimming space along with plants around the sides and back. Strong water flow is not necessary, but good oxygenation and regular water changes are helpful.
Boesemani Rainbowfish is a strong display species for aquarists who want colour, motion, and peaceful community compatibility in one fish. For best results, keep them in a mature aquarium, feed a varied diet, and maintain them in a proper school so their natural beauty stands out fully.
