The Blue Zebra Angelfish is a selectively bred form of Pterophyllum scalare admired for its elegant body shape, long flowing fins, metallic blue glow, and bold vertical zebra bars. This freshwater centerpiece fish brings height, movement, and strong visual contrast to community aquariums, making it a popular choice for hobbyists who want a graceful show fish without moving into very large monster fish setups. Juveniles are especially eye-catching, and as they mature the body develops a taller profile with more commanding presence.
Blue Zebra Angels do best in well-maintained aquariums with gentle filtration, stable temperature, and enough vertical swimming space. They are suitable for aquarists who can provide regular water changes and carefully chosen tank mates. While generally peaceful compared with many larger cichlids, they can become territorial during feeding or breeding, so layout and stocking matter.
Key Features
- Appearance: Tall laterally compressed body with elegant finnage, metallic blue sheen, and distinct dark zebra striping.
- Size: Commonly sold as juveniles, but adults can reach around 15 cm body length with much greater overall height including fins.
- Colors: Blue iridescence over a silver base with strong black vertical bands that become very attractive under aquarium lighting.
- Lifespan: With proper care, angelfish can live around 8 to 10 years in a stable freshwater aquarium.
- Temperament: Semi-peaceful cichlid; usually calm in community tanks but may show territorial behaviour toward similar-shaped fish or during pairing.
- Water Type: Freshwater species suited to clean, warm tropical aquariums.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended for a pair or small group, with extra height preferred because angelfish are tall-bodied swimmers.
- Water Parameters: Ideal temperature is 24 to 30°C with pH around 6.5 to 7.5. Stable conditions are more important than chasing exact numbers.
- Diet: Omnivorous and easy to feed on quality flakes, granules, small pellets, frozen foods, and occasional protein-rich treats.
- Tank Mates: Best kept with peaceful to moderately active fish that do not nip fins. Avoid very tiny fish that may be seen as food and aggressive fin-nippers.
- Aquascape: Use open swimming space with plants, driftwood, and calm zones. Vertical décor and broad-leaf plants help them feel secure.
- Care Tips: Maintain strong filtration without excessive current, perform regular water changes, and acclimate slowly after transport to reduce stress.
Blue Zebra Angelfish is an excellent choice for aquarists who want a premium-looking freshwater display fish with classic angelfish grace and standout patterning. For best results, keep them in a mature tank, avoid overcrowding, and choose companions that match their calm but mildly territorial nature.
