Alligator Gar is one of the most dramatic monster fish available in the aquarium trade, admired for its ancient appearance, broad alligator-like snout and hard, armor-style scales. A 10 inch specimen already has a bold presence and is suitable only for hobbyists who understand the space, filtration and feeding demands of a very large predatory fish.

This species is not for community aquariums or small home tanks. As it matures, Alligator Gar grows into an extremely large freshwater predator, so buyers should plan for long-term housing from the beginning. It is usually chosen by advanced aquarists building a true monster fish display or a very large indoor tank setup.

• Tank Mates: Only consider very large, robust fish that cannot be swallowed and that can handle a monster fish environment. Small fish, shrimp and delicate species will not be suitable.
• Care Level: Best for advanced keepers due to eventual size, feeding behavior, heavy filtration needs and the requirement for secure lids because gar can be powerful surface-oriented fish.
• Tank Setup: Provide open swimming space, strong filtration, subdued stress-free surroundings and a tightly secured top. Decorations should not restrict movement.

Before purchase, make sure you are prepared for the long-term commitment of housing a giant freshwater predator. Alligator Gar is an impressive specimen for serious monster fish keepers, but it should only be kept in systems designed for its eventual size and strength.
